Storyline:
MI5 personnel are caught up in a traffic jam in London while escorting the CIA's most wanted terrorist to an arranged CIA handover point, when he is suddenly rescued by armed men on motorbikes. Harry Pearce, the head of Counter-Terrorism at MI5 is blamed for the terrorist escaping. Especially as Harry disappeared shortly after the incident. An ex-agent, Will Holloway, and protégé of Harry's is recalled by MI5 to assist in finding and bringing Harry in. However Harry has disappeared for a reason. Certain that there is a traitor in a senior position in MI5, he enlists the somewhat reluctant Will to help him in uncovering the rat or rats concerned.

Spooks was undoubtedly a riveting espionage drama series for the BBC which never shied away from killing off some of its key cast members. Now four years after its final episode Spooks returns as a feature film for the cinema.
Nothing unusual about this move. I remember in the 1970s the TV show The Sweeney spawned several films for the cinema with the television cast reprising their roles.
With Spooks not many of the television series cast remained so Harry Pearce (Peter Firth) is central to the plot and he is joined here by new cast member Kit Harington who plays a former agent brought in to flush out Harry after a wanted terrorist escapes.
Of course in the cinema this film will compete with Mission Impossible, James Bond and Jason Bourne but with a lower budget and lower wattage stars.
Mission Impossible was a television show re-tooled for the cinema backed by Tom Cruise and the off centre talents of Brian De Palma. Spooks has one of the show's director back for the film but its a plodding style without the flair, style and pacing of the television show. In fact I found it pedestrian despite some international location filming and bigger budget.
The escape part of Qasim looked silly in the first place. A wanted terrorist is being transported and they are stuck in traffic with no police sirens anywhere to shift them all.
The film was decent enough but not a cinematic event. I watched it closely mainly because my brother was an Extra in the film, never spotted him though.

When their attempt to rob a casino owned by the feared gangster Pope goes awry and a shootout ensues, Vaughn and Cox are forced to flee on foot and hijack city Bus 657 and take the passengers hostage.

Taking a well-known format and adding nothing new to it, along with some dubious plotting and logic, Heist comes out as another hackneyed cliché. Even with the star name of De Niro this threadbare filler is full of testosterone but lacks any mental ability at all. Indeed, the presence of De Niro is somewhat uncertain and it may be time for Bradley Cooper, who does an excellent De Niro impersonation, to take his roles and allow the former actor to retire finally.
The set up allows the writer to excoriate the American health system, which is apposite as it fails on any measure of value delivery, but this basis is squandered in a standard heist story with a crew that has no brains at all and consequently its fate is entirely predictable.
Enter the police with their own mental deficits and some temporarily attractive stunts which are used to disguise the utter absurdity of the police plan and its flawed execution.
A few additional plot points make the story cohere, if it can be said to, but in an unconvincing way, typical of the fashion that screenwriters deceive gullible producers into making this type of product which has tested well with average teenage males in major markets.

These young woman are telling this story inside a glass mansion, filled with millions of dollars of artwork, as if they were living in a contemporary museum with artworks including works by Urs Fischer, Rob Pruitt, Dan Colen, Franz West, Steven Shearer.

I had the pleasure of being able to see "#Horror" at the New York City Horror Film Festival with director Tara Subkoff and the young cast in attendance. I'm a fan of Subkoff's art, and also of many of the cast members, so I've been waiting to see the film since I first heard it had been announced. The plot focuses on one night in a chic, secluded mansion where a group of privileged Connecticut adolescents are having a sleepover. Internal bullying and cyber-obsession amongst the girls drives the evening into increasingly dark territory, culminating in bloodshed and murder.
As much as "#Horror" is a genre picture, it is also vital to note that the film is in more ways a satire on cyberculture and 21st century youth, which is reiterated time and time again with chaotic montages of digital media graphics, uploads, and live streams at the hands of the girls in the film. The subject matter in and of itself is Subkoff's thematic core, while the genre fixings are merely her method of employing the story.
The film is exceptionally shot— beautiful, atmospheric photography of rural Connecticut winter landscapes establish the setting for the night's antics to unfold. Snow, dead trees, and barren forests give the film an unsettling wintry feel. The sleek and chic cubic mansion is nearly a character in and of itself with metaphorical significance, boxing the girls and the adult figure (Chloë Sevigny, in this case) in their own respective worlds. The house is a beacon of wealth and luxury, designed and furnished more as a multi-million dollar art gallery than a home; while this does provide for flashy aesthetics which may come across as ostentatious, the setting is vital to what is being conveyed here; it isn't arbitrary, and correlates with the very world that is being examined. The sterilized environment of affluence serves the film well, and I'd imagine Subkoff wrote the script with it in mind, or at the very least, a house much like it.
I've read some comments across the internet questioning the film's worth as a "scary" piece of cinema—after all, it is twelve year old girls who lead the audience through this macabre odyssey, right? As a hardened genre fan, I did not find the film "scary," but there are some great, disturbing images that are throttled at the audience in the final act, and the atmospheric tension is what really took me into the film and kept me compelled. There are visual nods to Dario Argento, and I also couldn't help but wonder if Subkoff's choice of masks were riffs on the "Last House on Dead End Street" or "Alice, Sweet Alice"— regardless, they are appropriately sinister.
The cast here is fantastic. The adult figures in the film are mostly Subkoff's own friends, including minor performances from Natasha Lyonne, Stella Schnabel, and Taryn Manning; Chloë Sevigny takes on the primary matron of the film. Sevigny is very much at home in the role, and gives the boozy socialite mother an unexpected depth that at times reminded me of Joan Crawford—her performance is understated and skilled, which is typical of Sevigny. Timothy Hutton plays the hysterical millionaire doctor whose troubled daughter finds herself at the center of the girls' fighting, and is both funny and intimidating in equal measure. The young actresses in the film are the real heart of the picture though; as much as the film is a meditation on plutocratic parenting (or lack thereof), the world of these girls is ultimately what is being analyzed. The casting of young actors can make or break a film, and Subkoff had a great eye for who she chose to take on these roles—they are not flawless performances, but each of the girls are commendably talented and capably handle the material.
There were moments where I did feel the film was spinning in on itself with the repetitive montages of the girls frolicking around the house and playing endless dress-up games, though I cannot negate the reality or non-reality of this— I'm a 25-year-old male who came of age in a considerably different world, when the internet and social media was still a nascent cultural force. While these scenes do grow slightly monotonous around the hour mark, the film then begins edging into genre conventions that have their own digital twist.
Overall, "#Horror" is solid film, and a nice debut for Subkoff. Employing the horror genre in the way she does is a clever mode of storytelling, especially given the contemporary thematic center of the film, and chilling visuals and cinematography carry it along elegantly. It is not a film that can or should be approached as a slice-and-dice picture, because that's not what it is— there is slashing, no doubt, but it is secondary to what is really being dissected in the script. "#Horror" is a far cry from the territory of last year's "Unfriended," and is frankly all the more interesting for it. It may be the best film about cyberculture and youth cruelty that we've seen yet.

The infamous Kray brothers – identical twins Reggie and Ronnie – are so well known in British gangster history they've already had multiple films made about them. What writer-director Brian Helgeland brings to the table with his take on the notorious siblings is exuberant storytelling, classy visual styling and a tour de force performance by Tom Hardy as both twins. Hardy's dual turn is undeniably the centrepiece of the movie. His Reggie is all charm and swagger, with intelligence and ambition to boot, whilst the schizophrenic Ronnie is a short-tempered ball of emotional bluster. Helgeland sensibly opts to make Reggie the focus; of the two he is the more grounded one, a gangster with lofty aspirations and the ability to interact on a human level with those around him to make his goals a reality. There is also genuine chemistry between Hardy (as Reggie) and Emily Browning, her fragile yet strong-willed Frances able to draw out the romantic side of Reggie, making his bursts of savagery all the more terrifying. Sporadically placed throughout the (overlong) two hour plus runtime, the bouts of violence bubble with intensity and exhilaration, often uneasily enjoyable thanks to moments of levity sprinkled alongside them. The 60s setting is capitalised on too, Dick Pope's elegant photography giving proceedings a classical feel while Carter Burwell's powerfully soulful score affects deeply at all the right times. There's a sense of glorification here that mightn't sit well with some audience members, however the Krays were adored in the East End and to deny the glitzier parts of their life would be to deny what made them popular to begin with. An exceptional crime picture with two outstanding performances from one man, proving again that Hardy really is an acting… legend.

This is an absolutely spectacular addition to the Bond series, featuring a thrilling plot as well as deep and unpredictable intrigue from start to finish. What's more is that it expertly blends the tropes of both classic and modern Bond together to make a hugely satisfying and well-rounded film, making this surely one of the best there has ever been in the entire series.
In comparison to its predecessor, Skyfall, which was also a hugely entertaining film, however, Spectre is a much more mature and effective film. It doesn't have as fast pacing as Skyfall did, and nor does it feature action sequences as long and as big as that film, but what it does have is a brilliant sense of patience, waiting all the time to strike at the moment when you least expect it, and when that happens, it's a truly wonderful feeling.
So, don't expect to be constantly on the edge of your seat at every moment in this film, but do expect to feel totally and utterly engrossed in what is easily the most mysterious Bond plot of all. Yes, so many before have managed to have an unpredictable story, but there has never been a Bond movie like Spectre, that always holds back the big action scenes and big reveals, making you work hard and think hard about the story, and that just invests you so much more.
Don't think, however, that this isn't an action-packed film, because it is. There are some astonishing chase and fight sequences that hark back to the golden days of James Bond in the 1960s and 70s, with Dave Bautista's Jaws-like henchman character providing a good deal of the scares and excitement in all of them.
But for once, this isn't that sort of film. Sure, you'll still get a great kick out of the action, but there are other things at play here that are so much more effective in creating tension, mystery and excitement than what big explosions can ever do.
Thanks to the sublime direction of Sam Mendes, the stunning performances by Daniel Craig, Léa Seydoux and Christoph Waltz, so many scenes feature an overpowering sense of dread and eeriness that are heightened by the frequent extreme silences, and it really makes for effective tension and drama at every moment.
Finally, Spectre triumphs spectacularly in the characterisation of James Bond. We've seen Bond on the back foot before, we've seen him victimised by his own organisation, but never have we seen Bond appear so truly weak. Craig still puts in the effort as a strong action hero, but the bulk of his performance comes in the form of showing 007's fear and anxiety of the mysterious forces at play in this story, to such an extent that, throughout the film, Bond's life is in a genuine, tangible danger like it never has been before.
